Can I Use Rosehip Oil Directly On My Face?

One of the most common questions from rosehip oil beginners is: can I apply it directly on my face, or do I need to dilute it first? The short answer is yes — you can use rosehip oil directly on your face. Here's everything you need to know to do it safely and effectively.

Is Rosehip Oil Safe To Apply Directly On The Face?

Yes. Unlike some essential oils (such as tea tree or peppermint), rosehip oil is a carrier oil — meaning it's gentle enough to apply undiluted directly to the skin. It does not need to be mixed with another oil or product before use.

Rosehip oil is:

  • Non-irritating for most skin types
  • Non-comedogenic (comedogenic rating: 1/5)
  • Free from harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances (when pure and unrefined)
  • Suitable for sensitive, dry, oily, combination, and mature skin

How To Apply Rosehip Oil Directly On Your Face

  1. Start with a clean, toned face
  2. Dispense 2–3 drops into your palm
  3. Rub your palms together gently to warm the oil
  4. Press into your skin using upward motions — do not rub or drag
  5. Allow to absorb for 1–2 minutes before applying other products

Do You Need To Dilute Rosehip Oil?

No — rosehip oil does not need to be diluted for facial use. It's already a pure plant oil with a light texture that absorbs well on its own. Diluting it would only reduce its effectiveness.

The only exception: if you're adding an essential oil (like lavender or frankincense) to your rosehip oil, you should dilute the essential oil in the rosehip oil at a safe ratio (typically 1–2% — about 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil).

How Much Rosehip Oil Should You Apply?

Less is more. 2–3 drops is enough for the full face. Using too much can leave a greasy residue and won't improve results. For dry or mature skin, you can use up to 4 drops at night.

Can You Apply It Around The Eyes?

Yes — rosehip oil is gentle enough for the delicate eye area. Apply with your ring finger using a light tapping motion. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and the lash line.

Who Should Do A Patch Test First?

While rosehip oil is well-tolerated by most people, we recommend a patch test if you have:

  • Very reactive or allergy-prone skin
  • A known sensitivity to rose family plants (Rosaceae)
  • Active eczema or rosacea flare-ups

Apply a small amount to your inner wrist and wait 24 hours before using on your face.

When Is The Best Time To Apply It?

Rosehip oil can be used morning and/or night. For most skin types, evening application gives the best results. Read our full guide on when to apply rosehip oil: morning or night, and discover the benefits of leaving rosehip oil on overnight.

How Often Should You Use It?

Once or twice daily, depending on your skin type. Read our dedicated guide on how often you should use rosehip oil for a full breakdown by skin type.
